Welcome to the Aapje Messenger website!
This site will inform you about the current status of Aapje Messenger. Because we are new to SourceForge.net it will take a while before everything is in place. Several docs and cvs files still have to be uploaded before we can really get started. We hope you will enjoy our modern MSN Messenger client for Linux.
Pebrot is a text MSN messenger client implemented with Python. It has also a pretty and colorful Curses-based interface.
It is developed under Linux and should work fine on any other *nixes.
You must have Python 2.2 or higher installed, Python 1.5.x is not supported.

27/01/2009: Long time no see!! First of all thanks to the people who reported the crash. Even right now when Pebrot is in maintenance mode crashes like this should be reported. This bugfix release fixes the error with UUX command and from now on new messages like this won’t crash Pebrot. Download it from here and enjoy =).
29/04/2006: We’ve been real busy today! We have fixed all the errors that we found to date and we’re proud to release pebrot-0.8.8. Also, SVN has been updated. There are 2 main branches now, trunk (stable branch) and pebrot-dev. The rewrite of Gabber for Gnome 2 is coming along pretty well. For further information on the next generation of Gabber, you should go to http://gabber.jabberstudio.org/. All future development of Gabber will be taking place from there. <julian>
23 May 2003: Gabber 0.8.8 Released
A new version of Gabber has been released. This version features a lot of small updates over the past year, including a status icon using the freedesktop.org protocol for GNOME2/KDE3, nickname highlighting in group chats, a Read Previous button in normal messages, an updated XML parser, and a bunch of bug fixes. There are several other changes as well, be sure to see the NEWS or ChangeLog for more details.
Update: Those of you looking to test extremely alpha software may wish to take note of Gabber 2: 1.9.0 preview release. It is very alpha software at this point, and there are no binaries. <julian>

DISCLAIMER : this project is really old (2002). It was made a time when the msn messenger client on windows was really basic, missing functionalities like animated and custom smileys. At the same time linux client where rare and buggy, for example smileys were not working t all and non-ascii characters where missing. I keep this webpage and this project merely for remembering me of my youth. Don’t expect this to be a fully working client,the gtk part was made at a time when there was no doc, and everything was coded by looking at the source code of the library :)

What is gtkmsn ?
gtkmsn is a msn protocol based client (alla Win*ows Mes*enger). Based upon gtk+-2.0 it provides all basic functionnality, plus a lot of goodies, like custom definitions of smiley (see screenshots)
The BETA has been released so go fetch it and run : ./configure & make & make install

Harbinger 1.0 beta 2 released.
Changes:
- Several severe bugs fixed:
* When you closed a chat window, and the remote user
tried to send you a message, Harbinger would segfault.
* The switchboard server will close the connection
after some idle time. Harbinger would not reopen
the connection when needed.
* Messages which are not received by a single recv()
system call are now handled correctly.
- Not a bug as such, but Harbinger will try to resolve
the directory where the executable is located.
The directory is needed for loading the icons.
- Some minor bugs fixed.
- The chat edit control will disable/enable when users
logs out/in.
- Now possible to put your public IP address in the
ini-file, useful if you are behind a NAT firewall and
want to send files, in addition to receiving them.
(See the example harbinger.ini file)
You will need the ZThread library to compile Harbinger.
