我々が居住する天の川銀河は､唯一近くにあるため､星の分布(3次元 地図)や星の運動を精密かつ詳細に明らかにすることができる｡
銀河系中心部方向の個々の星までの距離(年周視差)や接線速度(固有 運動)を25μ秒角の精度で求める｡
25μ秒角とは：1億4400万分の1度角｡通常のｽﾀｰｾﾝｻの星位 置決定より10万倍良い精度｡富士山頂に置いた毛髪1本をｽｶｲﾂﾘｰ から見込んだ角度のおよそ10分の1｡
2013年打ち上げられたﾖｰﾛｯﾊﾟの位置天文衛星Gaia(可視光観測)で は観 測困難な､塵(ちり)に覆われた銀河中心領域を､小型JASMINEは透過 力の 高い赤外線波長で観測する｡
