A roadmap towards standardized neuroimaging approaches for human thalamic nuclei
The human thalamus comprises multiple nuclei with distinct connectivity patterns and anatomical features; however, current neuroimaging approaches have a limited capacity to delinate individual thalamic nuclei. Segobin and colleagues outline the challenges that this presents to our understanding of the function of these nuclei and propose a roadmap for the future of thalamic neuroimaging.

Pictured is a spectrum of visual texture information encoded across the primary (V1) and secondary (V2) visual cortices of the primate brain. Image content in green is defined by a distribution of orientations and spatial scales but is otherwise random. Image content in blue contains higher-order structure matched to that of a natural image. The intermediate areas titrate the strength of these natural image statistics. Macaque monk

Dopamine dynamics are dispensable for movement but promote reward responses
Experiments using conditional RIM1 and RIM2 knockout mice and acute pharmacological manipulations clarify the role of rapid dopamine dynamics, whereby these dynamics are dispensable for movement initiation but important for reward-guided conditioned behaviours.

Female calls promote song learning in male juvenile zebra finches
Juvenile male zebra finches learn their songs from adult male tutors, but the role of females in this process is less clear. Here the authors show that the presence of adult females enhances song imitation in young males, with female calls influencing both the behavior and neural activity linked to vocal learning.

Let's fail better: Using philosophical tools to improve neuroscientific research in psychiatry
Inés Abalo-Rodríguez, Chrysanthi Blithikioti,
First Published: 14 October 2024
Neuroscientific research in psychiatry adopts a number of implicit philosophical assumptions about psychiatric conditions that influence how experimental questions are framed.
These implicit assumptions can be summarized as: “the analogy problem”, the “normativity problem” and the “priority problem”.
Each of these assumption
