Global coordination of brain activity by the breathing cycle
Synchrony between neuronal activity and the respiratory cycle has been observed in numerous brain regions and across many species. Tort et al. discuss the mechanisms by which brain activity is modulated by breathing and describe the functional impact of this synchrony on perception and cognition.

Neural manifolds: more than the sum of their neurons
In this Journal Club, Juan Gallego discusses a 2014 article that provided a first causal hint that neural manifolds may not only be a convenient way to interpret neural population activity.

Shown is a partial 3D reconstruction from serial electron microscopy of a developing mouse cerebellar Purkinje cell (gray). In neonatal mice, climbing fibers (CFs) target Purkinje cells. But during development, neural connections are refined by selectively strengthening specific CFs, which emerge as the “winners,” and eliminating redundant ones. In this image, dendritic spines of the Purkinje cell envelope enlarged and lobulated “winner” CF terminals (green) to form specialized contacts. This structural refinement underlies the maturation of cerebellar circuitry. See the article by Nitta et al. for more information on the structural differentiation of CF inputs to Purkinje cells.
